DSfix 0.4

This version fixes the Depth of Field (DoF) effect, the last huge “bug” of the mod in my opinion.

  • Added an .ini setting for overriding the DoF resolution
  • I also provide the option to completely disable DoF scaling. However, I don’t recommend that. I think the game looks better with DoF, and it’s the way From Software intended it. Also, disabling the DoF this way may actually reduce performance.

See a screenshot showing off the fixed DoF here.

  1. More fantastic work by you. Thank you very much.

I just want to point out one little thing that I think you should note in the next *.ini file. I tried setting a custom resolution for the DOF resolution, 1440, and ended up with the black box/white box problem. Please do note that if people do have this problem, that they should ONLY use the resolutions specified in the list: 540, 1080, 2160.

1080 works for me just fine, and the game is looking fabulous.

  2. This is awesome! Thanks so much for this. I really took you no time to do this as it seems. Great. I tried it out and played 2,5 hours straight through Blighttown, Blighttown Swamp, Queelag and Ceaseless Discharge. Just one or two stutters, worked like a charm.
The only thing I noticed was some lines around letters in the splash srceens, but thats fine by me ;-)

That one screenshot here seems to be the german version: Vielen Dank – Du macht eines der besten Spiele besser!

  3. Don;t know if anyone else has run into this, and I’m not sure if it has anything to do with this fix, but when I run the game all the menus and the HUD are the proper resolution, but 3/4 of the screen is black during any actual gameplay with everything happening in what looks to be a 640×480 window in the upper left corner.

I’ve tried everything I can think of to fix it, changing resolutions, turning windowed mode off/on, and even reinstalling, nothing fixes it. I’m at a loss on what else to do, its not playable this way.

  4. Threw a couple of bucks your way for the work you’ve done so far. Hope you’re able to get around the Optimus thing going eventually. Good job!

  6. Thank you for this mod! However, I have a problem. I have a 4:3 CRT screen which I love very much. Will it be possible to force the game to play without letterboxes in 4:3 aspect ratio? Also, the game crashes if I try to go fullscreen with your mod installed.

  7. I own a ATI 5700 series graphic card and Dark souls worked like a charm yesterday, even with the mod on.
Today it’s a whole different story, I tried to use my already created character but the game crashed after a short while. I tried to create a new one, but the game crashes in the opening cutscene. I’ve tried all I can think of, removing the mod, reinstalling Dark souls, updating my drivers but nothing seems to work.
Any suggestions? I don’t have a clue where to look anymore.

  8. No wonder you think it doesn’t look good without depth of field. Because it doesn’t. But the reason is that the override doesn’t work. The back ground is still blurry with the option activated.

  10. Is possible to fix the camera? When i move mouse just a little.. it’s FAAAAAAST. But when I move mouse quickly, the camera is slow.. WTF? Doesn’t make any sense :D I know it’s the port, I just asking if it’s possible to fix that..

  11. thank you man. you rule.
just a question. is there ANY possibility to make a solution for this f’in 30 fps lock in the future update?

  12. Anybody getting tearing this game? Keeps a solid 30fps with this fix, but it just seems to tear now and then especially in cut scenes or when moving the camera quickly. Tried a variety of different Vsync settings (gts450).

  13. Great work…the texture is perfect…i manage to have 30fps on Phenom X4 965 and gtx 580! but i find a little bug..my camera is fixed on the head player! I manage to escape presing alt+f4…..enter right now and i come back in with a comment!

  14. Could you make the mouse and keyboard controls work well. That will make a lot of people happy tx.

  15. Nice job, thank you again!
Just want to report my impressions of it. I’m playing the game with the 0.4 fix and have set the internal resolution to 1366×768 (the same of my laptop’s monitor resolution), 540 DoF and no change to texture filtering.
    My system:
    Intel Core i5 M 540 @ 2.53GHz
    NVIDIA NVS 5100M (1gb dedicated DDR3 RAM)
    8 gb DDR3 RAM
I get 30 fps in the main menu but only 15 fps ingame (the previous fixes ran the same).
However, my CPU usage never goes above 40% and my GPU usage rarely goes over 70% (usually stays in the 60s AND no Intel HD graphics here). Total RAM usage remains at 1.8 gb. The GPU shares the RAM with the System. (no own vram).
I manage to run games like DX:HR and Skyrim on 40 fps with medium to mid-high settings and the system runs fully under load.
But it’s not the case with Dark Souls. The game doesn’t make full use of the hardware. The fans didn’t even start to run for the first 10 minutes.
I thought I could run this because it doesn’t seem that demanding. But no, only stays at 15 fps. Without the fix it struggles between 15 and 30 fps but nothing that is playable.

    • And to add something more: It doesn’t even reach 30 fps at the lowest possible settings (with and without fix). So i think the game itself is poorly optimized. Or is it really my laptop and I should throw it away?

  16. I tried all fix and doesn’t work. When I run the game it shows “Dark Souls stopped working” : (

I don’t know what to do because AA/Motion are OFF and the DSfix.ini is OK.

    Totally nosense issue :\

    • delete the fix, change ingame resoultion to 1024×768

then apply the fix should work now

      then change resolution again

      • Different person but I have the same problem, I tried changing it to 1024×768 and it still crashed upon startup. I’ve used all the versions so far without issues, but now even when I try to reinstall the 3rd version it crashes.

  17. Thanks again my friend. You turned a failed game into a gem. A grip of my friends were not gonna buy the game anymore until you came along and saved it. Great job.

Some players in the community are wondering if you will be increasing the UI resolution some time along the way. To me, that would be the last thing visually that would need to be corrected. Seeing a high resolution game with a very low resolution UI hurts the eyes a bit.

Once again, thank you Durante for your continued support and sense of urgency for the PC community. Keep kickin’ ass and chewin’ bubble gum.

  18. Wow thank you so much this is fantastic!

Your one of the best graphical modders out there man keep at it!

  19. Awesome update, Do you plan on working to fix colour banding that happens in areas like the hydra at dark root basin?

  20. Add something that lets me run the game in Windowed mode with 4:3 aspect ratio.

    If possible, that is.

    Cheers.

  21. Hey, did the 0.4 update break the ‘F9 to hide mouse cursor’ functionality?

Win7 64 here, 560 Ti running at 2560×1440 downsampled, dof 540, dof scaling enabled, filtering override 1

    • Edit: rebooting seemed to fix it.

Any plans on fixing the texture clamping? There’s faint white boxes around the intro screens and I believe some textures in-game

  22. Hello.
Do you have any plan for optimus version or any idea to turn on gpu high performance without GFWL issue?

  23. The readme mentions the ability to adjust the resolution that DoF is rendered at, yet the Ini only has settings for turning it on and off. Also it isn’t entirely made clear which setting provides the best image quality.

      • For me distant objects are both blurry and very pixellated and I was excited when I saw you mention the ability to adjust the resolution of the DoF effect but when I opened the INI file I can only find an option to enable or disable it. No way to fix the pixellation, only a way to fix the blur.

        • can’t you read taken from dsfix.ini
          # Depth of Field resolution override, possible values:
          # 0 = no change from default (DoF pyramid starts at 512×360)
          # 540 = DoF pyramid starts at 960×540
          # 1080 = DoF pyramid starts at 1920×1080 (for high end systems)
          # 2160 = DoF pyramid starts at 3840×2160 (if you have an utterly insane ultra high end PC)
          # higher values will decrease performance
          dofOverrideResolution 540

          • My bad lol. Quick question though, what does DoF scaling refer to? Does disabling it make the option above it meaningless or?

          • Hey buddy , where do i put this Depth of Field resolution override, possible values ?

  24. Damn nice work. If feel like continuing work, I think it’s time to hook up with Boris Vorontsov :D

  25. Incredible great work!
I’ve donated a small sum cause you’ve menaged to vastly improve this game on pc.
    Keep the good work up!

  26. nice its working well
are u creating something to upgrade the performance as well ?
during my game everything looks nicebut the performance….its so laggy ^^ nomatter which resolution i use

  27. Thank you very much Durante. Was this update also meant to fix the issue for Optimus users? If so, it has not been successful. Thanks anyway for all your hard work.

  28. Sadly enough, none of your version work for me :(. I use a ATI Radeon 5770. It keeps saying “stopped working” at launch.

  29. Thank you very much :P

Just an idea, but do you know if there could be an easy way to unlock FPS defaulting either to 30FPS (if the Graphics Card can render above) or to 15FPS (if it’s below 30FPS), so even if there are drops due to hardware the slowdown wouldn’t be that dramatic?

    • I expect the physics effects in the game would get very wonky if the fps isn’t capped at 30.

  30. Great job man, the difference is simply gargantuan.

Without your mod I would feel like I was playing an emulated PS2 game, but this fix makes it more like a PC game.

Keep it up, I will be donating soon!

  31. Great work durante, looks much better now.

I don’t know if it’s possible but would you be able to add your TPXAA as an option to your mod?
