  1. Not much but sent ya $5. Now all we need is to figure out why the game suddenly decides to drop to 15fps randomly. I have a gtx 680 so it can’t be not having enough power.

    • In theory yes, but almost all other games I know of actually allow you to select your rendering resolution.

  2. hey great mod but I’m trying to play the game on both my laptop and pc and I’m trying to run the game in 800×600 and the game crashes every time I load it up using the mod and yes I turned off AA and motion blur and it still didn’t work so if you could fix that it would be awesome

  3. Any way to get this to work on a laptop w/ optimus? on my gt60 (680m and i7) it shoves the game into the top left quarter of the screen and looks/runs terrible. On my desktop though it runs fantastic.

  4. Worst fucking port ever made. I have 15fps at Undead Burg doesn’t matter what kind of settings I adjust.. my eyes are bleeding! The mouse sensitivity is also bad, with keyboard and mouse this game is unplayable. But when I tried playing with gamepad my right analog stick is worked inverted so basically I can’t play. Because settings like invert axis or mouse sensitivity not appears in the options menu.

    • Make sure you edit the dsfix.config Internal rendering resolution. by default it is set at 2560×1440 which is high.

set it to 1280×720 or 1920×1080 whatever you PC can handle. It still looks sharp and you will get 30fps. I had exactly the same problem as you. It works and it looks great

    • I saw a temporary fix on another site, they suggested setting mouse sensitivity to 0. You’ll have to deal with a slow as shite camera, but at least you won’t have to put up with mouse deceleration.

    • If you are doing x360ce trying to emulate a 360 Controller try “Options” –> “Hook Mode” instead of “Normal”.

  5. For everyone bashing From Software, imagine this for a minute:

You’re the maker of a game that you worked on for the last 2 – 4 years perfecting it, balancing it. You also work on making sure it looks as good as it can while performing as ideally as it can for the system(s) it’s on.

You test and test until you are confident in your game in both visual design, performance, and otherwise. Then you ship your game off. Your game ships and it’s relatively well received.

All of a sudden a huge petition appears on the internet where 80,000 people on a platform you never programmed on before, request your game to be ported onto that platform. It’s daunting, but you care about your fans and would like to make the game for them. But you know it takes time to make it, test it, and ensure the quality is up to par.

Then your publisher (your boss that controls all your money), comes up to you and says. “Hey this is a limited-time interest thing. We need you to get this ported onto that platform ASAP. With additional content too, since people aren’t going to really bite without that. YOU HAVE 6 MONTHS.” Conversation over.

    What would you do?

You know it took you 2 – 4 years of consistent testing to make what you have now, and to make sure it performed correctly on the platforms it’s currently on. Now you only have 1/8th – 1/4th of that time to make sure you get it on that platform, make sure that it works, AND ensure it has additional content which ALSO works.

Wouldn’t the best course of action be to release original game in it’s mostly unchanged form?

I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what happened here. They didn’t want to risk the game looking too derivative from their original intention for the amount of time that they needed to test everything.

So they left the renderer as is, and that’s why it looks so much like the original console version. It’s the safest option, which gets PC users the game they asked for along with the new content that is exclusive to them.

When people bash From Software, it kind of pisses me off. Since you can tell they worked really hard on this game, and put themselves out there and took a risk to make the game on this platform.

Plus they’re selling this game with additional content, at a price much lower than it originally sold for. I dunno about you, but I think that’s a steal.

They’re a good company and none of you can doubt that this is a GREAT FREAKING GAME. Honestly, the bashing is unnecessary and unwarranted.

    • I think Durante is amazing for making this utility and I humbly bow to his work. But I think the bashing of From Software really should stay out of it. We get an amazing game, with awesome new content, at an amazing price.

A game that originally wasn’t going to even come out on this platform. A platform that From Software didn’t even program on before. Why? Because the fans requested it! How many companies out there do you know that have done something like that?

Have a little humility and be thankful, to both Durante and From Software for their contribution. Of course it’s not thankless (you still have to pay for the game). But I’m just saying the bashing doesn’t help anything or anyone.

      • It’s true, but naive to think that From did it from the good of their own hearts. Namco-Bandai saw dollar signs with all the requests and made them do it as quickly and cheaply as possibel

  6. Someone please help me. I did everithing, even changed the .ini file under C:\Users\[YourUserName]\AppData\Local\NBGI\DarkSouls\DarkSouls.ini, but it still locked on 15 FPS, any ideas?

  7. Hi, everyone.
I’m optimus laptop user, and as was mentioned before, I changed with hex editor d3d9.dll in “data.exe” into d3fx.dll. And changed the name of d3d9.dll in the root folder. Indeed, optimus works now, I get 30 fps on my gt555m. But suddenly Games for Windows Live won’t run on the game start anymore, and I can not save due to this. :/

Is there anything I can do to get optimus, this mod, and Windows Live work along? Help, please.

  8. I’m currently running the game on Parallels on my Macbook Pro 15″ late 2011. The game was running fine before, but after applying the fix it won’t proceed past the first loading screen (where it should display the Namco Bandai logo I get just a blank white screen). What’s worse is that I’ve tried force quitting the game, but to no avail. Now instead of a desktop all I have is a blank white screen (and according to task manager the game isn’t even running anymore).

  10. Hi Durante, I want to thank your for your work, and for this excelent fix. I have one request, THAT MANY PEOPLE AGREE WITH, we need a fix for people that use 16:10 monitors. Because the game was made to be used with 16:9, people that use 16:10 monitors have the letterbox showed (black bars at the top and bottom screen, much like a cinematic. PLEASE.

    • This is probably doable, but requires a lot of effort. I’d like to first focus on the larger remaining issues, such as the DoF resolution.

  12. Hey man, Thanks a lot for making this. It’s unbelievable the difference it makes. It actually feels like it improved my game as well. (I am on a AMD card)

  13. FPS Fix The fix is to open up the DarkSouls.ini file and manually set your fullscreen resolution and monitor’s framerate there.

The .ini file is located here: C:\Users\[YourUserName]\AppData\Local\NBGI\DarkSouls\DarkSouls.ini

  14. So, I was looking, and I can’t find where to put these files.. It’s probably blaringly obvious, but I’m having trouble finding where the Dark Souls executable is. Can anyone help please?

  15. Hi, Congratulations for your awesome work ^_^

I installed the new Cathalyst AMD/Ati drivers this morning, then I tried your mod but the the gaming screen is small in the up left corner of my monitor. The right side of the monitor is black with only the start menu.

  16. Can someone help me? im using a gtx 460, amd athlon x4 @ 3.1ghz, and 4 gb of ram. Im getting just 15-25 fps in this game with lag spikes to 8 when i should be at 30fps 100% of the time while playing this game according to similar setups. Anyone know whats wrong or how to fix this? This is while playing with 1600×900 with no aa or blur. HELP

  17. Do you mind making a mod to remove the 15fps frame lock? I’m supposed to be getting like 30 fps with my current setup, and since I get a little under 30 I’m getting locked down to 15, which is playable, but the game is extremely unenjoyable. I’m sure if there was some mod that could remove the 15fps lock for people who aren’t getting 30, I would get 25fps (character creation– perfect 30fps, no problems).

  18. Hey man. When my roommate tried this it made everything except the menu disappear. When he removed the files, the game wont even launch now. He even had steam redownload and reinstall the game and it still wont even launch. Help please? D:

  19. Hi. Sorry if i sound really dumb, but i cant find my darksouls.exe. I am not familiar with the location Steam installs the games. If anyone can help me that would be great.

  20. Sorry for a second post… Just tried it. No crashing, but I am having issues. The game loads, then after the first GFWL message pops up, the screen starts flickering really badly. Whole screen goes blank like ever other frame. Have it set to my monitor’s native resolution of 1080p. Not sure what the issue is, but definitely unplayable. Thought it was the Steam community stuff, so I disabled that. Still no improvement.

  21. Help, the fix does not work! I have tried using dozens of different resolutions suggested in the neogaf thread and in the steam forums. Nothing works, I see no visible change in image quality. I have followed all instructions to the letter. My card is 560 gtx ti. Native res 1280×1024. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. i play yesterday normal version was very fun.

today apply the patch and do some tweeks, the game start and when GFWL task bar appear and the dark souls msj of autosave appear the game just frozze or stop tottaly. y take off the fix files, and put ati ai to normal and af, keep the same, cant play it :S.

i manage to get to the options and put off aa and motion blur and its still the same, the game crash on the start

  23. I think something may be wrong with the mod, or.. maybe the game in general. I was in the depths headed for the fight with Kirk, Knight of Thorns, while human. The wall of fog appeared as though he were “invading” but i never got a notification, and eventually it faded away entirely. It also seemed as though someone was trying to invade (bonfire wouldn’t light) but never failed or invaded. If this isn’t the mod and just something wrong with the game, someone let me know?

    • Mmm.. Maybe something was just bugged with my login or something. I just got Kirk to spawn.. though still no sign of a player.

      • had the same thing, but after checking the wiki it appears that people can invade you “secretly” (didnt mention how to do that) wich means you will get attacked by no warning…

    • I think that happens when a player is just about to invade you, but fails to actually do so because of connection errors? Not sure, but this happens on the console version.

  24. You’are ignoring me,aren’t you pete?You’re a genius,so my problem is puerile for you…hehe…

      • It is possible…I can set the resolution on 400×300 via this mod but it looks horrible. If i set the resolution to 640×480 don’t send error appear after the start screen…Strange,no?

  25. Wow. Great work so far!

I was just wondering if this is working for Win7 x64 users? I heard on the Steam forums that this fix causes the game to crash if you’re running a 64-bit version, but that was back in the first release.

  27. Any idea if you’d be able to get a fix to get it to work better on ATI cards? I can imagine lots of people would be very greatfull.

  29. My native resolution is 1440×900 , when I use DSFix with default internal resolution ( 2560×1440 ) and my native as the “present resolution” I get a letterbox effect (black bar at the top, bottom of screen) and in the log it mentions the requested mode being 1440×810 (creating the letterbox effect). Here is the log: http://pastebin.com/1hpn3EEb

any ideas on how I can fix this and get the game to run completely fullscreen at 1440×900 or is that not possible with this resolution?

  30. wow man. I grabbed my coffee and saw this. you have been busy. i just noticed the fps-vsync option in the ini. looking forward to having that capped slightly higher. will def help in those drop 15 fps areas. cheers

  31. Gorgeous work. I’ve got an AMD CPU and Card. It’s an old CPU so performance isn’t great, but my 6870 is reporting 0% activity. I had a similar situation when Rage had just been released. Game still runs nice and, mostly, smooth though :). Thanks!

  32. Thanks! Donated.

Here’s hoping you can sort out the textures / lod and add some more options like the FXAA Tool has

  33. This mod is quite good but I’d like to mention something I’ve noticed. When/if I change the resolution settings in the .ini file the game no longer recognizes my save game. Luckily for me the default 1920×1080 is very close to my monitor resolution, which is 1900×1200, however I feel this ought to be mentioned so that hopefully it can be fixed for other people with different resolutions.

    Thank you.

  34. Thanks so much for this! This is why the PC community is awesome. Looking forward to spending a lot of time with this game and this mod totally justifies the wait for a PC release.
